“Get Involved – Development of Youth Workers and NGOs Working with Migrants and Refugees” The staff of Europejskie Forum Młodzieży (EFM) were highly motivated to implement the project “Get Involved – Development of Youth Workers and NGOs Working with Migrants and Refugees,” which focused on gaining practical educational experience through job shadowing. EFM is a non-governmental organization that has been supporting youth and promoting non-formal education in the Kłodzko region for over 25 years. The political situation in Europe — particularly the war in Ukraine — led to a large influx of refugees to Poland. Between February 27, 2022, and June 30, 2024, approximately 55 Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war were accommodated at EFM. Most of them were mothers with children and young people. The support for Ukrainian citizens was organized in cooperation with the Municipality of Międzylesie. However, our initial experience revealed that despite over 25 years of expertise in youth work, volunteering, and non-formal education, we lacked structured models and sufficient experience in working with refugees. Working effectively with refugees requires not only empathy and commitment but also specialized knowledge and cross-sectoral cooperation. Since no established framework or model existed within our organization, our initial actions were based on previous experience with disadvantaged youth and a “trial and error” approach. The project Get Involved, through job shadowing, provided EFM staff with practical educational experience and valuable opportunities for professional growth. It had a direct impact on the quality of our work with young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. Participation in job shadowing fostered knowledge transfer, improved work quality, encouraged innovation, and most importantly, allowed participants to bring new practices and experiences back to EFM. Project Objectives The project aimed to: develop the professional competences of EFM youth workers; enable knowledge transfer from experienced organizations across Europe; foster the exchange of experiences and good practices; improve English language skills, especially professional terminology related to youth work and migration; enhance the quality of projects implemented under the Erasmus+ Programme and the European Solidarity Corps; introduce new and innovative solutions in projects involving young refugees and migrants; implement new educational methods in youth work; strengthen the institutional capacity of EFM; provide more attractive and relevant projects for young people, especially refugees and migrants; ensure more effective actions for the benefit of the local community; create a more modern, dynamic, and inclusive environment within EFM for both local and international youth; effectively use new technologies for project management, dissemination of results, and building a recognizable and modern organizational brand. We believe that cooperation with experienced European partners significantly contributed to achieving these objectives. The professional development of our staff directly enhances the quality of our projects, broadens opportunities for young people — particularly those from refugee and migrant backgrounds — and supports the introduction of innovative approaches in youth work.
