Objectives

We wanted to raise awareness about the importance of ecology, sustainability, and the need to address environmental challenges. Our goal was to encourage students and their communities to adopt sustainable, healthy, and slow living practices that align with global sustainability goals like Agenda 2030. We aimed to provide students with hands-on experience and practical knowledge about gardening, plant cultivation, and the role of plants in the environment. By setting up school gardens and incorporating sustainable gardening practices, we wanted to equip students with the skills to grow their own food and take care of nature in a responsible way. By collaborating with schools from different European countries, we sought to promote cultural diversity and improve students’ communication skills in English. We also wanted to create a space for students to learn about gardening and plant life in various climates, such as Mediterranean plants like grapes and olives, as well as plants specific to Poland and other regions. We wanted to bridge the generational gap by involving both young students and retired individuals .

Background

We applied for this project because we observed a significant lack of practical knowledge about agriculture, gardening, and sustainability within our community. Through conversations with the parents of our students, it became evident that many were unfamiliar with the processes of growing a garden and taking care of crops. This gap in knowledge prompted us to create a project focused on educating students and the broader community about ecology, sustainability, and healthy, sustainableincrease awareness of environmental issues and the importance of sustainable practices in daily life. Additionally, we sought to promote cultural diversity and inclusion by collaborating with schools in other European countries, improving communication skills in English, and fostering a sense of European identity and citizenship. Another need we identified was the lack of intergenerational collaboration, as many traditional gardening skills and local knowledge were at risk of being lost. This project allows us to reconnect students with these valuable traditions. Through this collaboration, we hoped to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make more sustainable choices in their own lives and communities.
