Objectives

First, we sought to promote awareness among young Europeans about glocal and inclusive approaches in sustainable consumption and production as climate action tools, mixing fair trade principles with campaigning on green legislation. Second, we intended to boost transnational peer-learning by sharing and replicating good practices and success stories to increase organizational capacity to involve young Europeans, especially those with fewer opportunities, and engage them in sustainable behaviors tackling climate change. Third, we committed to contributing to social inclusion by training young Europeans, particularly those facing barriers, and involving them in developing activities, tools, and campaigns, recognizing their expertise and developing their sense of belonging through civic participation in sustainable consumption. Fourth, we aimed to test innovative practices preparing learners, staff, and youth workers to become true change agents opting for sustainable food, clothes, and consumer products with glocal and inclusive approaches. Finally, we sought to promote active citizenship raising awareness and advocating for proper transposition in implementing countries of EU values-driven legislation through youth-led policy.

Background

We applied for the Glokers project to address the urgent need for youth-led climate action through sustainable consumption and fair trade practices. European youth, particularly those with fewer opportunities, face limited knowledge and engagement opportunities regarding the connection between local consumer choices and global environmental impacts. Despite EU green legislation, young people often lack the tools, skills, and platforms to participate meaningfully in sustainability initiatives or advocate for proper transposition of these policies at national levels. Our partnership identified critical gaps in youth workers' capacity to engage disadvantaged youth in environmental activism, insufficient educational resources connecting EU policies to local realities, and limited opportunities for young Europeans to develop concrete glocal actions combining local initiatives with global sustainability goals. The project responds to these needs by creating accessible methodologies for participatory mapping of sustainable initiatives, developing inclusive recruitment strategies reaching young people facing arriers, building capacity through innovative training combining fair trade with EU climate legislation, and empowering youth.
