Objectives

Internationalisation is a strategic priority for the three higher education institutions that are part of the UNorte International Consortium — the University of Minho (UMinho), the University of Porto (U.Porto), and the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD). In a highly competitive scenario, these universities collaborate to expand their international reach and enhance the reputation of Northern Portugal in higher education and scientific research. The establishment of the UNorte International Consortium serves as a strategic cooperation platform that respects the autonomy and institutional identity of each member university while fostering synergies in areas of common interest. Key areas of collaboration include academic mobility, joint research initiatives, and shared representation in international higher education networks, research programmes, and multilateral projects. This partnership aims not only to boost the international visibility of the three institutions but also to provide meaningful international opportunities for the professional and personal development of both academic and administrative staff. Mobility for teaching or training purposes is regarded as a cornerstone for curriculum innovation, exchange of best practices, and knowledge transfer — all vital to the modernisation and internationalisation of higher education. This integrated approach to internationalisation responds to contemporary challenges and reflects a forward-looking commitment to the collective future of the universities and the sustainable development of the region they represent. The initiative contributes to positioning Northern Portugal as a dynamic hub of innovation and a key player within the European education and research landscape.
