Objectives

The Erasmus+ Programme, and in particular its KA131 action, has been fundamental in the planning and implementation of the internationalisation strategy of the University of Algarve (UAlg). Its importance is not limited to internationalisation at European level, but also extends to the rest of the world, as a result of greater flexibility in the financial rules of this action. The focus of the KA131 action is on student mobility for studies and internships, as well as staff mobility, seeking to meet the commitments made by UAlg in relation to its mission and the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). In this sense, we can highlight as fundamental objectives of this project the promotion of quality education; the reduction of inequalities, and the promotion of partnerships for the promotion of SDGs within the scope of other actions of the Programme. In addition to these objectives, there are the four main guiding principles of the Erasmus+ programme: inclusion and diversity; digital transformation; environment, climate and sustainability; and active participation in democratic life. In addition, and in line with the European Commission's strategy for the internationalisation of higher education, the focus has been on participating in European Alliances of higher education institutions, with their own legal status, with the aim of pooling resources and creating academic programmes of excellence. In this regard, UAlg's participation in the European University of the Sea (SEA-EU) since 2023 is particularly noteworthy. In view of the above, the objectives of the University of Algarve within the framework of this project were as follows: to increase the mobility of students and staff, with particular emphasis on the European University of the Seas; to provide students with contact with different and new learning experiences and improve their personal and professional skills; to encourage their active participation in democratic life and promote European identity and values. With regard to staff mobility, the creation of joint courses (bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees) within the European University of the Seas was promoted, as well as the creation of Blended Intensive Programmes, the signing of new interinstitutional agreements, the promotion of new partnerships within the scope of other Erasmus+ Programme actions, the strengthening of contact networks and the exchange of good practices. Finally, one of the biggest challenges facing UAlg in its internationalisation strategy concerns its commitment to place 50% of its students, teaching staff, researchers and administrative staff in mobility programmes at partner universities of the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU) by the end of this decade. The Erasmus+ Programme, and KA131 in particular, will be crucial to achieving this goal.
