Objectives

The project had three main objectives: - to develop students’ coding skills while enhancing their understanding of the causes and solutions to climate change; - to train teachers in innovative methods that combine computational thinking with environmental education; - to create practical, reusable resources that make climate education more interactive and effective. Our goal was to move beyond traditional textbook learning by encouraging students to actively create digital games and stories about climate issues, making the learning process more engaging and memorable.

Background

This project was developed in response to two gaps identified in education. Firstly, a UNESCO survey revealed that many young people have insufficient knowledge about climate change - around 27% reported being unable to explain it. Secondly, it was found that STEAM subjects, such as climate science, were taught mainly through theoretical approaches, with little emphasis on practical application. We recognised that computer science could help bridge this gap: while scientists use coding to analyse climate data, schools were rarely taking advantage of these practical methods. Our partnership therefore brought together schools from across Europe facing similar challenges, with the goal of providing students aged 12 to 16 with more engaging ways to learn about environmental issues while simultaneously developing essential digital skills.
