Objectives

We are living through a tense period in Europe, not only because of the extremist and violent movements that have emerged in several countries, but also because of the geopolitical instability of our continent's borders (as has been seen in Ukrainian and Russian territory), the alarming scarcity of natural resources, the various cyber-attacks on public-private structures and the economic and social crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Although we are aware of the urgency of reversing these instabilities and fostering social and community cohesion, the truth is that on the other side of the scale we don't have enough resources to counterbalance these adversities to social and political stability. Despite being the most educated generation ever, young people have a huge gap in their knowledge of European history, a lack of knowledge about the milestones of the Culture of Peace and an alienation from important contemporary global issues that concern the civil, political and democratic spheres. According to the Council of Europe (2021) ‘it became clear that institutions have difficulty in grasping not only what these new forms of youth participation are but also the issues that mobilise young people. For their part, young people are facing unemployment, job insecurity, difficult transitions to work and adult life. They are increasingly disenchanted and feel marginalised from the political process.’ Specifically, in Portugal, a study recommended by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (2020) called ‘The Political Participation of Youth in Portugal’ reveals that ‘Regarding political aspects, the sample shows little or no interest in this subject and classifies the functioning of democracy in the country, on average, as reasonable (...)’. For the above reasons, we decided to go ahead with this Accreditation. Our main motivation was to raise awareness, inform and train citizens in the Culture of Peace, which is essential for the equitable, inclusive and cohesive functioning of societies, by stimulating activities and dynamics involving young people and youth workers, as well as the community and its agents. Increasingly, we cannot forget and devalue our history. The history that has led us to today's contemporary society, which nevertheless faces challenges that limit the development of its groups and territories. In this sense, we want to empower, involve and connect young Europeans, on the one hand, and strengthen the intervention capacity of youth workers, on the other, in order to value and recognise the capacity of the young generation to produce a path of social change. Providing skills, promoting learning experiences in European and local contexts, cementing the relationship and collaboration between organisations and sectors and recognising the youth sector as one of the greatest foundations for change today and in the future were also the motives that led us to this application. With the group of young people, our motivation was to create opportunities for their personal, social, cultural and professional development, enabling them to acquire key competences and benefit from intercultural experiences full of dynamics that are crucial to their empowerment. We wanted to put young people at the forefront of resolving their internal challenges and resolving common challenges, creating spaces and moments of learning in which everyone defined their own path and actively participated. With the group of youth workers, our motivation was also to create opportunities for their personal, social, cultural and, above all, professional development, so that they can recognise new ways of working with young people, innovating and incorporating quality into their activities and those of their organisations. In addition, we wanted to strengthen the role and use of non-formal education in working with young people, promoting means of training that complement formal education and creating European synergies. This process of investing in and valuing young people and their potential is essential to guarantee future stability and cohesion and to ensure that challenges do not turn into vicious, repetitive cycles.
