Objectives

We were inspired to create “C.R.E.A.M. - Financial Literacy For Youth” by the understanding that young people are experiencing a huge gap in knowledge regarding financial literacy, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. The main goal of our project was to fight youth unemployment and poverty by promoting financial literacy and good financial habits among 30 participants from 5 different European countries, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Romania and Estonia. Our goal was to provide participants with essential life skills in investing, saving, making healthy financial decisions, and strategic planning to achieve their financial goals. These skills are crucial for avoiding poverty and achieving a fulfilling life. Through our daily work with young people, we identified that many lacked access to reliable and easy-to-understand financial literacy resources, relying instead on random online gurus who want to profit from them. According to studies like “Financial Literacy Around the World” by Klapper, Lusardi, and Oudheusden, only one in three adults can explain basic financial principles. This shows a global need for improved financial literacy education. In the EU, financial literacy rates vary significantly, with countries like Portugal, Spain and Romania performing below the global average. We aimed to address this issue by providing a personalized and structured learning experience to the participants. To address these challenges, C.R.E.A.M. was designed as a 9-day youth exchange involving 30 participants from Portugal, Romania, Estonia, Spain, and the Netherlands. The project used non-formal education methods to involve the participants in their learnings and the creation of the project outcomes: “C.R.E.A.M. - Financial Literacy for Youth: Basics”, a playlist with 5 videos made by participants explaining essential financial literacy concepts and "C.R.E.A.M. - Financial Literacy Video" a project highlights video, ensuring that participants could, not only, learn through experience and practical application but also access all their learnings in the future. The specific objectives of C.R.E.A.M. were: Fight youth unemployment and poverty through the promotion of financial literacy and good financial habits. Provide skills and knowledge in investing, basic economics, financial decision-making, saving, and strategic planning to empower youth. Educate on personal finance concepts such as cash flow, income, expenses, liabilities, and assets through simulation-based games. Promote and introduce European opportunities for youth and new entrepreneurs, connecting them with EU resources and opportunities. Encourage active community involvement through non-formal education, providing new career options. Foster intercultural understanding and respect by connecting young people from diverse backgrounds, promoting democracy, diversity, human rights, and active citizenship. Support personal development and autonomy by equipping young people with life skills to cope with a changing world. In conclusion, C.R.E.A.M. aimed to empower and introduce young people to essential financial literacy concepts, enabling them to be the architects of their financial situations. This project promoted resilience and provided them with the necessary tools to start healthy financial habits to achieve their goals. By promoting financial literacy and connecting participants to European opportunities, we sought to create a positive impact that extended beyond individual participants to national and European communities.
