With this project, we aimed to engage in a dialogue about gender equality and gender roles in different social environments. We wanted to challenge both young people and youth workers with different perceptions of the roles of men and women in our societies and in the past. But what defined gender? The behaviours of different sexes and genders? The differences between genders? Was it biology, or was all of this a social construction? We and our partners planned this project to discuss, analyse, understand, and propose new approaches and views on these subjects. We created simple social media tools, workshops, and other creative, playful, and artistic activities to help young people (and consequently their families, friends, and communities) understand these issues more easily and become more self-aware of their everyday behaviours. We brought together young people from four countries: Portugal, Spain, Poland, and Türkiye. All these countries faced serious gender discrimination and gender violence problems. Many people, from different cultures, backgrounds, and educational and economic levels, were often confused by so many “status quo” behaviours, political correctness, old and new civil, political, and religious gender concepts, and current gender laws. Therefore, we believed there was a significant need to clarify and simplify these gender-related issues for young people. That was why we planned to develop this project and its youth exchange activity for and with younger people, because we believed they were often less aware of these diverse gender issues. From our international project experiences, we already knew younger people had less information about gender issues than older individuals. With this project, we sought to learn more about sexism and gender-based discrimination in our society while raising awareness and building positive attitudes regarding this delicate topic.
