The mobility project for students and staff in higher education, Key Action 131, aims to support cooperation between European universities through academic exchanges, to strengthen the international dimension of higher education institutions, and to promote intercultural dialogue. In this context, the Maritime University of Constanta implemented the project in order to respond to the general objectives of the Erasmus+ programme, while also fulfilling the specific objectives of its institutional strategy. The main objective was to increase the visibility and popularity of the Erasmus+ programme within the academic community of our university. We aimed to encourage both students and academic and administrative staff to participate in mobilities, thereby benefiting from the unique opportunity to study, teach, or follow training programmes in an international environment. We believe that the direct experience of mobilities significantly contributes to the personal and professional development of participants: students improve their linguistic, academic, and intercultural competences, enhance their employability in a competitive global market, while academic and administrative staff diversify their professional expertise, bring innovative teaching methods, and build lasting connections with international partners. Another important objective was the consolidation of our network of international partnerships. The Maritime University of Constanta seeks to cooperate with prestigious higher education institutions across Europe, and mobilities facilitate not only exchanges of students and staff but also joint research projects, conferences, and other activities that contribute to the development of the academic community. Through these partnerships, the university strengthens its international profile and assumes an active role in the European Higher Education Area. A particularly valuable outcome of this project was the support offered by outstanding international partners, especially in the case of student traineeships. Crewing agencies and international shipowners covered the costs of travel, insurance, and visas for students undertaking their practical placements, as a way of encouraging them to remain employed within their companies after the training period. This practice, commonly encountered in the maritime industry, had a major impact both on students—who benefited from smoother professional integration—and on the university, which was relieved from allocating financial support for these expenses in the reporting platform. Consequently, Erasmus+ funds could be redirected to cover a greater number of grants, thus maximizing the positive impact of the project on the academic community. The project also played a key role in supporting the university’s internationalisation strategy. Internationalisation is one of the fundamental pillars of our institutional development plan, and mobilities funded by Erasmus+ are essential tools for achieving this goal. Students and staff returning from mobilities bring back new knowledge, best practices, and innovative approaches, thereby contributing to the modernisation of the educational process and the improvement of teaching and research quality. Furthermore, the project supported the horizontal priorities of the Erasmus+ programme: inclusion and diversity, green transition, and digital transformation. The university encouraged the participation of students with fewer opportunities, promoted values related to environmental protection and sustainability, and placed emphasis on the use of digital tools within mobilities. In conclusion, through the implementation of this project, the Maritime University of Constanta aimed to provide its academic community with valuable development opportunities, to strengthen international cooperation, and to assert its position as a modern, inclusive institution oriented towards excellence within the European higher education landscape.
