Objectives

The "Play for Democracy" project aimed to empower young people (aged 18-25) in Romania by using video games to promote democratic values, specifically active participation and voting. The project addressed key topics such as democracy and inclusive democratic participation, digital skills and competences, and awareness about the European Union. This initiative was especially relevant considering the elections scheduled in 2024—local, national, European Parliamentary, and presidential—where over 1 million young Romanians would be eligible to vote for the first time. We wanted to transform this first-time voting experience into a meaningful and motivating journey, making democratic participation both engaging and accessible. By merging our expertise in humanizing technology with our proven track record in game development mentorship, we sought to bridge the gap between civic education and an area that resonates deeply with young people: video games. Given the growing passion for video games among Romanian youth and the industry's potential as a career path, we used this as a tool to make democratic concepts more relatable. Through this approach, we aimed to foster informed, active citizenship by equipping young people with digital skills and a deeper understanding of the European Union and democratic principles. PLAY FOR DEMOCRACY MAIN ACTIVITIES WERE: 1. Youth Mobility (PFD Camp): A 7-day immersive camp aimed at increasing 16 young people’s knowledge of democratic and game development concepts, while enhancing digital skills and understanding of the European Union. 2. Mid-Event Presentation: An event to showcase the outcomes of the mobility, providing a platform for participants to present their progress. Initially we aimed to gather 25 participants and had 37. 3. Video Game Development Process: A structured period of mentorship for the development of the video games. 4. Video Game Launch Event: A final event where the completed games were presented to relevant stakeholders, including mentors, industry professionals, and peers. Initially we aimed to gather 40 participants and had 75. 5. Dissemination Process: Participant-led initiatives to promote the video game among their peers, ensuring broader awareness and engagement with the video games. Initially, we wanted to reach 80 other young people and reached 124. MAIN OBJECTIVES: 1. Empowerment of Youth: To empower 16 young people , including those from disadvantaged communities in Romania, by engaging them in a 7-day mobility (PFD Camp) focused on democratic concepts, digital skills, and game development. The camp aimed to enhance their understanding of democracy, inclusive participation, and EU awareness, while fostering their creativity in using game development as a means of expression. 2. Skill Development: To help participants acquire new skills in both civic education and digital competences by guiding them through the creation of an educational video game. This objective was crucial in ensuring that the project not only increased knowledge but also provided practical, transferable skills relevant to the digital era. 3. Promotion of Active Citizenship: To promote the resulting video game, which advocates for active participation and voting, among a broader audience of young people and relevant stakeholders. This dissemination effort was designed to extend the project's impact beyond the initial participants, encouraging a wider youth demographic to be aware of democratic values, the European Union and increase digital literacy.
