Objectives

Through the implementation of this project we aimed to achieve the following: To improve the psycho-social skills of volunteers working in the emergency system, enabling them to better cope with stressful situations, communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, and provide high-quality emotional support. To create a psycho-social education guide available in four languages, which would become a useful tool for training and continuous development for volunteers involved in emergency response. To organize training sessions thereby contributing to increased professionalism, empathy, and teamwork capacity among volunteers. To promote transnational cooperation between partner organizations through exchanges of experience, meetings and the sharing of good practices, in order to build an active European network in the field of volunteering in crisis situations. To strengthen the role of volunteering within the emergency system and promote its importance in communities through dissemination, information, and awareness-raising activities. The ultimate goal was to enhance the quality of intervention and also ensuring sustainable support for those who choose to serve as volunteers on the front line.

Background

We applied for this project in response to the urgent need to support and further develop volunteers working within the emergency system, who frequently face stress, emotional exhaustion, and critical situations. Our aim was to provide them with the necessary tools to better manage their emotions, communicate effectively with patients and intervention teams, and remain balanced and motivated in their work. We also identified the need to create a common psycho-social training framework, accessible in multiple languages, that could be applied in different European contexts. Until now, there has been a lack of a structured guide addressing key aspects such as stress management, empathy, emotional support, and teamwork. At the same time, the project responds to the need for international cooperation between organizations involved in emergency management, by facilitating exchanges of experience and good practices. In this way, we contribute to improving the quality of services provided to final beneficiaries and to strengthening a European support network in the field of emergency volunteering.
