Objectives

The project idea was to develop a nature-based YCampINLE model to promote environmental education that fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world, reinforcing sustainable and environmentally conscious behaviours and providing opportunities for youth to connect with nature, learn about the importance of protecting it, and develop skills to become responsible and engaged. Project objectives were: O1: to develop a YCampINLE model that promotes using nature as a learning ground, connecting youth with nature, and encourages environmental education and integration of nature immersion activities and learning through nature by activating all senses O2: to strengthen the capacities of youth-friendly organisations and youth workers to design and implement effective nature-based educational activities, including knowledge-building and networking O3: to create a stimulating setting to encourage youth exchanges under tents as a form that offers genuine connectedness and coexistence of young people with nature, and provides hands-on environmental education O4: to develop exhaustive dissemination of the YCampINLE model and connect with stakeholders at the national level and across Europe

Background

YCampINLE was developed in response to identified needs in youth work and environmental education. As young people increasingly spend time indoors and in digital environments, their connection with nature weakens, negatively affecting mental health, well-being, and eco-awareness. Research and practice show that merely transmitting knowledge about environmental protection is insufficient to foster sustainable behaviour; experiential learning that encourages personal connection with nature is essential. The project addressed the need for innovative, youth-friendly approaches combining time in nature, hands-on learning, and digital tools. It focused on young people with fewer opportunities and youth workers who lacked practical tools and models to organise quality activities and international exchanges in natural settings. YCampINLE also tackled practical challenges in rural areas, using camping as an accessible, inclusive, and sustainable format. The project focused on strengthening youth work capacities, enhancing the quality of E+ exchanges, and developing a model that promotes young people’s well-being, environmental awareness, and community building.
