Objectives

Internationalisation is a key tool for Uppsala University to strengthen the quality and relevance of its education and research. Recruiting international students and staff enhances the university’s expertise. According to Uppsala University’s Goals and Strategies (UFV 2018/641), internationalisation work has three main objectives: to deepen international collaborations and exchanges, to drive quality and enhance competence, and to be an attractive choice for teachers, researchers, and students worldwide. Each disciplinary domain, faculty, and department is responsible for setting specific goals to achieve these overarching objectives. The Erasmus Programme is crucial for Uppsala University as it lowers barriers to international collaboration and provides key opportunities for student and staff exchanges, professional development, and quality assurance. It plays a central role in student mobility, with nearly half of outgoing and 60% of incoming exchange students in 2023/24 participating through Erasmus. The programme also supports employability, strategic partnerships outside Europe, the European University initiative, and climate-friendly travel through mobility grants. The main driver of quality and skill is internationalization and thus Uppsala University encourages participation of students and staff in international activities. This is done through all four main activities within KA131. Participation in international activities is further enhanced by the implementation of new opportunities offered by the programme. We are aware that a global world faces new global challenges and thus we are committed to involve and enhance all four key priorities within the programme to the greatest extent possible. Uppsala University is committed to full implementation of the digitalization of mobility management through digitalization of the Inter Institutional and Learning Agreements; promotion of the sustainable means of travel by providing additional grants; in promoting doctoral mobility to boost the synergy between higher education and research and innovation. And no less important, by opening possibilities for traineeships within the scope of the international dimension as well as short traineeships, we are actively promoting the inclusion of all participants. This ensures that all students, regardless of their study program constraints, can gain valuable international experience. The approach of short traineeship is especially beneficial for those who, due to the nature of their programs or family ties, cannot participate in longer exchanges or have specific needs that require shorter exchange periods.
