Objectives

As the flagship university of northern Sweden, Umeå University (UMU) has always intended to function as a catalyst for high-quality education, research, and innovation. With a total population of 41.000 students, 4000 staff and around sixty different nationalities represented on campus, UMU was ranked first as for the world's most satisfied international students according to the International Student Barometer in 2023. Its living environment, student support and positive academic environment were some of the factors that contributed to this achievement. (ISB 2023 Wave 2) Internationalisation plays a strategic role at UMU, and it is conducted on many levels and includes both employees and students. Through networking, cooperation programs and platforms for education and research, our mission contributes to build up a more international environment at the university. Through participation in Erasmus+, Umeå University wants to continue developing the research and education within the university and through this also contribute to the regional development in this globally remote area as well as being a relevant actor globally. We are committed to being an active part of the international education arena which is aided by the programme. Our ambitious policy for internationalisation guides us in this work, and the programme is a key tool in helping us achieve our goals. The programme creates a framework that enables us to collaborate with strategically important partner universities and organisations that contribute to the quality and relevance of our education. Given the actual context of wars and conflicts in Europe, and beyond, it seems more necessary than ever to build and strengthen dialogue among people from different cultures. This is one of the pillars of Umeå University and the Erasmus+ program makes it possible. With more than 800 exchange agreements signed and 538 partner universities in 55 countries (figures extracted from the Annual Report 2024), collaborating with other higher education institution around the world is vital to tackle this mission. By implementing Erasmus+, we aim to strengthen existing partnerships and build new ones—both within Europe and beyond. The programme facilitates for students, teachers, researchers, and administrative staff to take part in exchanges and collaborations that foster learning, knowledge sharing, and long-semester development. These experiences contribute to educational renewal and enhance the quality of both research and teaching at Umeå University and is also contributing to the regional development. We are working to increase internationalisation at all levels of the university. As a regional engine for development, we want to create more opportunities for students and staff to gain international experience—both as a means of personal and academic growth and to ensure that our region has access to a well-prepared, globally aware workforce. Today only around 2% of staff and students conduct an international experience each year. One of our key ambitions has been to increase the number of students and staff who gain an international perspective during their studies or employment. This includes both physical mobility and internationalisation at home — through invited international teaching staff, staff returning from mobility sharing their experiences, and creating an international learning environment on campus. We also want to offer a broader range of mobility opportunities to suit diverse needs and circumstances — ranging from semester-long exchanges and traineeships to shorter mobilities such as Blended Intensive Programmes or similar. Other objectives during this project have been to develop our international participation with a focus on digitalisation, inclusion and sustainability.
