The ECO-STEAM project aimed to strengthen sustainability education by making it more engaging, interdisciplinary and relevant for students through the integration of STEAM, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR). A key objective was to build teachers’ capacity to confidently and effectively use emerging technologies in a pedagogically meaningful way. This included providing training, practical tools and structured frameworks to support the design and implementation of innovative teaching. The project also aimed to develop a modular and adaptable ECO-STEAM curriculum that connects environmental education, digital competence and interdisciplinary learning across subjects and age groups. Another objective was to create immersive learning environments where students actively explore real-world sustainability challenges through creative, experiential and problem-solving approaches. Finally, the project aimed to establish a collaborative network of educators to support knowledge sharing, professional development and the long-term integration of ECO-STEAM approaches in everyday teaching.
The ECO-STEAM project was developed to address a shared need across partner countries to strengthen sustainability education and make it more engaging, concrete and relevant for students. Sustainability topics are often complex and abstract, and teachers needed new approaches to support deeper understanding. At the same time, there was a clear need to support teachers in using emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR). Many teachers had limited experience and lacked the confidence, pedagogical frameworks and practical tools required to integrate these technologies effectively into teaching. The project also responded to the need for more interdisciplinary approaches that connect environmental education, STEAM learning and digital competence. In addition, schools identified a need for more engaging and inclusive learning methods that support different learners, including students with special educational needs. ECO-STEAM was therefore designed to build teacher capacity, provide structured and adaptable resources, and create opportunities for students to explore real-world sustainability challenges through active and experiential learning.
