Objectives

The main objective of the project was to reduce skill gaps in the photovoltaic, solar thermal, and photovoltaic-thermal sectors by improving the knowledge and competences of VET educators and trainees in response to the growing demand for solar energy. The project aimed to increase VET students’ employability by providing them with relevant skills aligned with current labour market needs and EU priorities. The project also aimed to support VET trainers by providing an interactive handbook and practical guidance on how to teach solar energy fundamentals, smart monitoring systems, and related technologies using innovative and engaging methods. At the same time, it sought to promote inclusive education by supporting the active participation and integration of migrant and refugee students in VET learning activities. Another key objective was to develop VET students’ practical skills in photovoltaic installation, monitoring, and maintenance through dedicated training modules, preparing them for careers in the solar energy sector. Moreover, the project aimed to introduce Open Living Labs as a long-term approach to encourage collaboration between VET students, educators, experts, businesses, and other stakeholders.

Background

The project was developed in response to the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the renewable energy sector, driven by the transition away from fossil fuels and the growing importance of sustainable energy solutions. As the solar energy market continues to expand, there is a clear need for vocational education and training (VET) systems to provide learners with up-to-date technical skills that match labour market needs. We applied for this project to address gaps in knowledge and skills related to photovoltaic and related renewable energy technologies among VET educators and students. The project aimed to strengthen STEM competences, support workforce mobility, and encourage entrepreneurial thinking through innovative and practice-oriented learning approaches. In addition, the project responded to the need for more inclusive VET education, particularly for migrant and refugee learners. By promoting intercultural awareness and involving migration experts, the project addressed the need for inclusive training methods that ensure equal participation, cooperation, and social inclusion within renewable energy education.
