Objectives

The main project includes several different activities which all take place at the so called "farm", Hästekasen Gård Förening (HFA). HFA can be described in many ways; it is a learning centre, an eco-community, an event, an adventure farm. Hästekasen has been accredited with the ESC/Erasmus Quality label but it is much more than that - other associations are involved, which all aim at making living on the country side more attractive. The goal is to become more sustainable by living together as a community, sharing skills and knowledge. Living standards are below Swedish average: it is chopping ones own wood, use dry toilets, do gardening, work outside in the rain, learn carpentry and how to live close together with others. On average, there are as many as 5-7 people living at the farm all year around, which increases to around 15-25 people during the spring/summer. We also have many members that keep returning, helping with new projects and becoming leaders themselves. These people are important, they form the educational core of HFA, and many are under 30 years of age. The ambition to make this place into an impactful and educative place for young adults has been a goal for the last 14 years already. The progress might be slow but the journey has been incredibly rewarding for all parties involved. The host and the project strive to support, inspire and empower everyone who steps into Hästekasen, with the common mission of creating a more sustainable, holistic and resilient society. Connecting people from different backgrounds but with similar interests is one of our key goals, as it always leads to new opportunities and experiences. The PEOPLE make the project, not the other way around. Together we create an experience that becomes so meaningful and worthwhile because of all the input and exchange we get from all its participants. This type of non-formal education, in which people are actively involved in their learning process and can help shape it, is a method we cherish and encourage actively at Hastekasen. We really hope to show young adults that they have resources inside themselves, and they can develop new skills and learn on the way. Communication, social skills, teamwork, adaptability and many more get pushed at Hästekasen, just by being there. We want them to question their future and their decisions; to have them prioritize their values and build a strong bond to themselves. By being surrounded by people from all over, with different plans and backgrounds, this can inspire them to new ideas, passions and futures. This is the context in which the project took place. 15 months of Erasmus which included 4 activities. The first activity was the annual Gimle LARP (Life Action Role Play) Youth Exchange in 2023, the second is an Youth Exchange 2024 on the same topic and the third a Survival and Outdoor Youth Exchange. Lastly a Training course for mainly host leaders and some partner representatives regarding methods of work/education (Leadership in nature/adventure, employability, learning to learn) The Erasmus activities mentioned above are linked to other activities at the venue of the host. So these four activities met the target groups needs, as well as our desire to support our organization's main objectives and work towards our long term goals. We wanted to achieve the following through the Gimle Youth Exchanges: Keep working with Ukraine and our usual partners by offering unique Youth Exchanges that challenge, educate and inspire. Introduce youngsters into living in an eco-conscious way in the countryside. We aimed for an intercultural exchange, an exchange of skills and knowledge. The Gimle YE is all about expressing oneself, learning practical skills, theatre, improv, flexibility and being creative. While educating about and participating in the LARP, the participants were also informally taught about the forest, basic outdoor skills and alternative living in the countryside. With the Survival and Outdoor Skills YE, the objective was to really pass on skills that are useful in nature but also to inspire and empower people about spending time outside. By feeling informed and capable, participants feel enthusiastic and free because they are confident in their own skills. At the same time, we wanted to support Ukraine and our other partners. Furthermore, returners were encouraged to lead many of the workshops and help design the youth exchange. The TC was efficient and rewarding, clearing out our relationship to some of EU´s overall objectives. In overall, by implementing the project, we hoped to invite more youngsters to an alternative way of living which would bring them closer to nature, pass on practical skills (such as gardening, knot tying, camping), connect different cultures and give workshops on valuable soft skills (such as self-expression, improv, NVC) and create lasting ties with the participants and the partner organisations
