Objectives

The project aimed to develop, pilot and promote an innovative And structured Peer-to-Peer Support Model that strengthens the participation, motivation and future opportunities of Roma students in VET. Our main goal was to empower Roma learners through structured support from trained volunteers who could offer practical help, encouragement and positive role-model behavior. We also wanted to equip teachers, mentors and counsellors with tools they can use to plan, monitor and evaluate mentoring in a consistent and supportive way. Another key objective was to enhance cooperation between schools, families, local communities and support organizations, creating a more inclusive environment around Roma learners. Through storytelling videos, best-practice collections and a transnational awareness campaign, we sought to improve public perceptions, highlight inspiring Roma role models and support stronger cross-border collaboration among partners. All objectives aimed at sustainable, transferable and long-term impact.

Background

We applied for the ASPIRE4R project because partners identified a clear need to improve the inclusion, motivation and school success of Roma students in VET. Roma learners have high rates of absenteeism and early school leaving, which in many cases is caused by low confidence, limited support at home, and a lack of positive role models in their communities. Before ASPIRE4R, most partner schools had no formal peer-support structure. Roma students often lacked trusted peers, role models, or accessible guidance to help them overcome school-related challenges. Schools and counsellors expressed a strong need for practical, structured tools to better engage Roma youth and strengthen cooperation with their families. At the same time, VET students were willing to help their Roma peers but lacked guidance and a framework. The project responded to these needs by creating a Peer-to-Peer Support Model that builds trust, increases motivation, promotes positive identity and helps Roma students understand their educational and career pathways. With partners from Slovenia, Romania and Italy, we aimed to address social exclusion and create long-term improvements in VET participation.
