Objectives

The project aimed to empower young women to pursue entrepreneurship and STEM-related career paths by providing them with the skills, confidence and support needed to develop innovative ideas. Its objectives were to create a comprehensive training Academy combining digital learning, mentoring and practical experiences; to strengthen entrepreneurial and STEM competences among women aged 18–30; and to build a supportive ecosystem connecting learners with mentors, role models, start-ups and innovation actors. The project also sought to promote gender-inclusive innovation, raise awareness of the gender gap in STEM and entrepreneurship, and enhance cooperation between education providers, training organisations and business support structures across Europe. Ultimately, the project aimed to foster a new generation of female innovators and contribute to a more diverse and competitive European innovation landscape.

Background

The FEM-Up project was created to address the persistent gender gap in STEM and entrepreneurship across Europe. Although many young women complete higher education, they remain under-represented among scientists, engineers and business founders due to structural barriers, lower self-confidence and limited access to mentors, role models and supportive innovation environments. Stronger cooperation between education providers and innovation actors was also needed to better prepare young women for future careers. FEM-Up responds by empowering women aged 18–30 through a comprehensive Academy that combines targeted training, digital learning modules, practical case studies, start-up engagement and personalised mentoring. The programme provides an inclusive environment where participants can build entrepreneurial competences, strengthen STEM-related skills and explore innovative career options. By connecting learners with mentors, role models and stakeholders across Europe, FEM-Up helps create more gender-inclusive innovation ecosystems. Ultimately, the project aims to reduce barriers faced by young women and contribute to a more diverse and innovative European economy.
