Objectives

The idea for the project was born out of the need to develop tolerance that we identified during our work with young people. The aim of the project was to support young people in developing the much needed skills of tolerance, solidarity, non-violence and non-violent communication, while at the same time being able to express their own needs and wishes. We wanted to bring together young people from diverse social, cultural and religious backgrounds in order to strengthen the social competence of cooperation and inclusion through personal experiences of socialising in fun and creative activities. We wanted them to learn first-hand and through personal experience that differences do not only divide us but also enrich us, that as human beings we are more alike than we are different, and that we share fundamentally the same core values, even if we come from very different national and cultural backgrounds with different beliefs. To achieve these goals, we sought partners from different religious and cultural backgrounds, from both European and non-European countries. We brought together young people from Muslim, Jewish, Orthodox and Catholic cultural backgrounds, and our main theme was not religion, but solidarity. Together, we organised an exchange that allowed the young people to spend 8 days in constant direct contact with peers with a very different cultural background from the one they are used to, despite globalisation. This experience of difference allowed them to confront and overcome their own prejudices, to learn about different beliefs and how they are formed, to strengthen their awareness of the European cultural space and European values, and to have plenty of space and encouragement to develop their own ideas, to make decisions, to manage and to learn from their mistakes. The purpose of the youth exchange was not to offer conclusions, but to allow participants to explore and learn about diversity in a safe and supportive environment. In doing so, we wanted to enable them to acquire values, skills and knowledge that they can transfer to their immediate and wider environment, thus contributing to a more tolerant and inclusive society, while also improving their employability. Through non-formal and experiential learning methods, we helped them to overcome some of the prejudices and judgements conditioned by their own culture and nationality and to build lasting acquaintances and friendships beyond Europe. One of the main effects we aimed to achieve was to stimulate awareness and reflection on topical issues of the day, to develop social responsibility, active citizenship, political participation and civic (self-)initiative, and to reinforce and disseminate European values beyond the borders of the European Union. This was no easy task, but we did very well and achieved all the objectives, also according to the feedback from the participants. The specific objectives of the project were: 1) To carry out an 8-day youth exchange in Slovenia with 31 participants, involving 6 partner organisations from 3 European and 3 non-European countries, with the aim of raising awareness of the social issues of intolerance and exclusion and promoting tolerance, solidarity, non-violence and non-violent communication. The project involved young people aged 18-25 and youth leaders from Morocco, Israel, Serbia, Italy, Poland and Slovenia. 2) To connect with different religious communities and stakeholders at local and national level; to visit the Muslim Cultural Centre, the Community for Krishna Consciousness and the Serbian Orthodox Church in Ljubljana and to meet with representatives of each community. 3) To observe the different prejudices and emotions (such as doubt, anger and fear) and beliefs related to each religion and see where they come from and how we can act on them. 4) To learn about good sustainability practices (visit to Ljubljana as European Green Capital 2016, overview of local practices, presentation of the Greendex project). Each of our projects has a sustainability component. 5) To prepare tangible products for presentation in local, national and international physical (publication, photo or video products) and/or online (TikTok reels, video, photo...) environments, according to the wishes, skills and abilities of the participants. 6) To issue 30 Youthpass certificates and involve young people in their preparation, thus supporting them in raising awareness of the value of their own learning experience. 7) After the exchange, prepare a public presentation in each of the partner countries to showcase the Erasmus+ programme, our project and its results, targeting young people aged between 15 and 25.
