At the youth exchange on the topic of accepting diversity and subcultures, which we held with the same partners years ago, young participants expressed dissatisfaction with their towns and a need for changes, especially in terms of content for young people and greater attention to their needs and wishes by decision-makers. Because of that we established three focus groups of young people from three smaller municipalities in Finland, Slovenia and Romania after the end of the project. Their purpose was to identify the needs of the youth and their knowledge of different ways they can make changes in their local environment. Through discussions in focus groups, we came to the conclusion that young people want changes and are motivated to implement them, but they lack knowledge about their possibilities for active participation and co-shaping of the space in which they live. Together with the partner organizations, we have come to the conclusion that active participation of young people is a topic on which we must focus and nurture the youth’s drive for active engagement and provide them with the knowledge necessary for them to achieve changes in their environment. With this project, we wanted to achieve exactly that: at the youth exchange, we wanted to offer them knowledge about participation through a series of workshops and group discussions and encourage them to further independently explore the possibilities for their active engagement. In addition, we wanted to strengthen their knowledge about the work of various decision-makers at the local level. With this, we wanted to empower them to start contributing to solving the problems they see in their towns. The goal was for the participants to prepare at least three project plans during the exchange for activities that will be implemented after the end of the exchange.
