Objectives

The idea for a youth exchange was presented by young people, with Kristjan Veber, an active member of the Celje Youth Center and a student, highlighting the issues of stress and its impact on the lives of young individuals. Young people in the age group of 15-30 observed stress indicators that lowered the quality of their lives, including stress in school and personal life. Research showed that stress indicators negatively affected the physical and mental health of individuals. Young people faced various stressful situations, leading to chronic health issues, strained relationships with friends/family, and financial difficulties. This was evident in the Mladina 2020 study, revealing a 110% increase in the percentage of young people in Slovenia experiencing stress most days of the week. The key negative outcome of stressful situations, as revealed by the study, was predominantly depression, globally ranking fourth among diseases affecting young people aged 15-30. The World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted additional physical and mental illnesses that affect young people in times of high stress: 1. Depression and anxiety 2. Behavioral disorders 3. Eating disorders 4. Suicide and self-harm The project's goal was to raise awareness among young people about the negative impacts of stress on their physical and mental well-being. The youth exchange "BE YOU" was pivotal, providing a platform for the exchange of experiences and knowledge among young people. Through various methods of informal learning, participants gained insights into different techniques for coping with stress. The objective was to introduce young people to methods and techniques that would help them manage stressful situations. Special attention was given to the COVID-19 pandemic, which introduced additional stressors into the lives of young people. The project included support in coping with these additional challenges arising from health, psychological, and financial issues, as the aim was to assist young people in their recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The goals of the youth exchange included: 1. Emphasizing the importance of conversation and addressing issues through workshops on responding to stress. 2. Developing understanding of non-verbal communication and its proper use. 3. Seeking ways to reduce stress in an individual's life. 4. Recognizing and finding effective methods of preventing stress. 5. Creating a manual on responding to stress and dealing with it. A specific project activity was the preparation of a manual on responding to stress and coping with it. The manual serves as a lasting source of information, offering practical guidance to young people for managing stressful situations. With all these efforts, the intention was to create a positive and lasting impact on the lives of young people, empower them to cope with stress, and encourage active sharing of acquired knowledge and skills within their communities.
