The goal of the Rainbow Europe project was to inform, empower and engage LGBTIQ+ youth to get to know the election process of the European elections, learn about political groups in the European Parliament as well as for them to acquire good understanding of how the European political development impacts their everyday lives. Through different activities such as debates, conferences or gatherings we wanted to familiarize the youth with the work of the European Parliament and the parties within it, to connect them with decision makers and party representatives and empower them to respond and influence the 2024 European elections. Before the start of the project we noticed a worrying disconnect, i.e. a lack of knowledge about the way of operation of EU institutions and politics among young LGBTIQ+ people. This is why one of the main goals was also to increase awareness about the importance of political participation on a European level as well as how does that impact everyday lives of young LGBTIQ+ persons in Slovenia. Our focus was on LGBTIQ+ youth that would, with the support of the employees of the association, empower other LGBTIQ+ persons for a more active participation in elective processes - in this example specifically for the European elections. The project would ideally inspire them to more actively engage with our association, to support and implement other activities as well as equip them for a self confident involvement in active citizenship and addressing the needs and rights of young LGBTIQ+ people.
