The ECOTOPIA - STOP ECOCIDE project was initiated to draw attention to global environmental issues such as pollution and climate change and to raise awareness on these matters. The project's background is rooted in the serious problems arising from the unsustainable use of nature by humans and the increasing environmental destruction. The primary goal of the project is to enhance the awareness of young people about the right to live in a clean environment, which is a human right, as well as about pollution and climate change, thereby developing their active citizenship skills. The industrialization process that began in the 19th century led to an increased demand for energy and consumption frenzy. During this process, nature became an object plundered by humans to build their civilizations. This situation has led to the emergence of global problems such as environmental pollution and climate change. According to a report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018, diseases caused by environmental pollution lead to the deaths of 12.6 million people each year. According to 2021 data from the United Nations, 663 million people worldwide still do not have access to drinkable water, and approximately 1.8 billion people use contaminated water sources. These issues demonstrate that efforts to protect nature against environmental destruction are insufficient. According to data announced by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Kocaeli is the second province with the highest increase in environmental pollution. One of the main reasons for the high cancer cases in Kocaeli is air pollution. This situation poses serious health risks for people living in Kocaeli and highlights the extent of environmental pollution. The project also supports international initiatives like the Paris Climate Agreement. This agreement aims to limit the global average surface temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius and, if possible, keep it below 1.5 degrees Celsius. European countries plan to ban the use of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2030. The main goal of the project is to increase young people's awareness of environmental pollution and climate change and to develop their active citizenship skills. Secondary objectives include increasing young people's knowledge about the scope, types, causes, and forms of environmental pollution, enhancing participants' knowledge about current environmental threats and nature destruction, and developing their experiences in environmental protection. In this context, the ECOTOPIA - STOP ECOCIDE project aims to draw attention to significant environmental issues such as environmental pollution and climate change and to raise young people's awareness, thereby developing solutions for a more sustainable world.
