With the project implementation, we aimed to increase the awareness of young people on disaster-related issues, to reduce the negative impacts of disasters on young people and to ensure that they become more aware individuals in disaster management and social solidarity. At the same time, by encouraging the active participation of young people in decision-making processes in these areas, we emphasised that they are not only a target group but also a part of the solution. Within the scope of the project, our primary objective was to increase the level of knowledge and awareness of young people on disaster management, risk reduction and community-based response strategies. To this end, workshops, interactive simulations and group workshops carried out in the presence of expert trainers enabled young people to gain capacity at both theoretical and practical levels. Another objective was to enable young people to be protected from the negative effects of disasters and to take an active role in these processes. In this context, young people have been provided with information on how they can act at individual and social level in crisis situations, and support has been provided with practical contents especially on issues such as psychological resilience, emergency planning and first aid. Involving young people in decision-making processes has been one of the basic principles of our project. Participant youth had the opportunity to freely express their ideas through round table meetings, forums and simulations and directly contributed to local and national stakeholders through policy recommendations. In addition, young people were provided with information on topics such as crisis management, post-disaster psychological support and volunteering, which contributed to their individual development and raised awareness for strengthening social solidarity. The national meetings organised during the project and the final ‘Summit: Supporting Young People Affected by Earthquakes’ event held at the end of the project, a policy document was created and this document was communicated to the relevant institutions, aiming to reflect the views of young people on public policies. In this framework, the project ensured the empowerment of young people, the construction of disaster-resilient societies and the inclusion of the youth perspective in decision-making processes.
