Implementing this project, the primary objective was to integrate activities designed in line with principles of environmental sustainability education into the teaching and learning process through innovative digital tools, and to foster students’ collective awareness of sustainability and positive attitudes towards nature. By promoting the effective use of digital technologies in education, the project also aimed to create a stronger space for communication and interaction on environmental sustainability among school-based actors. In this context, the project aimed to develop an e-learning platform including learning outcomes related to environmental sustainability and its sub-components, to provide teachers with an easily applicable and innovative digital resource, and to increase students’ learning motivation through gamified educational content. In parallel, it was planned to support innovative approaches in school education by developing digital materials that complement the Science curriculum. Another important objective of the project was to support teachers’ professional development in the field of digital methodology during the implementation process, to strengthen cooperation and alignment among international partners.
This project was applied for in response to the urgent need to develop an education-based and sustainable solution to the climate crisis, which currently poses a serious threat to humanity and our planet. The intensive use of fossil fuels, the rapid depletion of natural resources and increasing environmental degradation make it essential to achieve a transformation in individuals’ awareness and behaviour. It was considered that such a transformation can only be achieved through a systematic and high-quality educational process. Key European and international policy frameworks, such as the Europe 2020 Strategy, the OECD Environmental Performance Reviews and the European Green Deal, clearly emphasize the critical role of education in promoting sustainable growth, improving resource efficiency and combating climate change. However, it was identified that within existing teaching and learning processes, environmental sustainability is not sufficiently addressed in a holistic, thematic manner supported by digital tools. This gap constituted the core need that this project aimed to address. Through the project, it was aimed to increase students’ awareness of environmental sustainability, to foster positive attitudes towards nature.
