Transformative effects that go beyond standardised, requirement-based learning outcomes are a reality in adult basic education for educators and learners alike. Learners experience these effects, and many of these changes can be observed by educators, fellow learners, and outsiders. However, these effects often remain invisible and unnamed because the appropriate nuanced terminology is lacking, or because these dimensions of human learning are not considered at all in procedures for assessing learning outcomes. In our project, the assessment of learning processes and learning outcomes is understood as dialogue-based reflection on one’s own learning. It is not a bureaucratic requirement or a form to be filled in, but rather a path to insight and a space for dialogue. Both are essential for recognising and understanding these subtle, profound changes. This is why we have developed an assessment framework that facilitates reflection on learning journeys, documentation of learning progress, and celebration of learning achievements. This makes these subtle yet individually significant changes visible and gives them a voice.
Sometimes, change begins with a quiet statement. 'I see myself and the world differently to how I did yesterday.' It is precisely this quiet yet profound shift that our project is dedicated to. Our aim was to demonstrate that participation in adult basic education can lead to much more than just measurable outcomes in reading, writing, everyday numeracy, and digital literacy. It can touch a learner’s life trajectory, shaping their life story and strengthening their identity, while fostering social inclusion and participation. This individual educational achievement can transform learners from within and open up new opportunities for them. These transformative effects, which go beyond requirement-based and standardised learning outcomes, must first be made visible through reflection. Through analysis, individual and comprehensive learning progress becomes apparent. Our goal was to create an assessment framework capable of capturing the full breadth and depth of human learning. In doing so, marginalised and vulnerable adults are empowered as learners. This constitutes an active contribution to inclusion and expanding participation in lifelong learning.
