Objectives

The podcast aims to encourage, invite, activate, and prompt reflection among social care professionals across Europe, with the goal of promoting a context-strengthening approach in their work. Social care organisations must fully acknowledge the high and crucial need for a supportive network around children with disabilities and their families. The natural network should be recognised as an essential partner in every process involving a child with a disability. An increased level of trust from professionals in their own potential, in the strength of the natural context, and in the collaboration between the natural and professional networks contributes to the wellbeing of all stakeholders involved. Knowledge-sharing and -expansion, providing both a framework and tools, are offered in an accessible format, notably through a podcast composed of multiple episodes. By staying close to the experiences of the professionals and network figures featured in the podcast, we arrive at practice-based evidence on what truly works.

Background

There is a growing awareness of the significance of working with the natural network — that is, the parents, siblings, extended family, friends, neighbors, etc. — of a child with a disability. Professionals in the disability sector are increasingly confronted with parents and families who are exhausted, socially isolated, not receiving tailored care, and placed on waiting lists etc. We frequently observe a sense of insecurity in professional action when it comes to how to respond effectively. This creates a clear demand for training, theoretical frameworks, and practical tools that are both accessible and of high quality. Establishing a European partnership allows for the collection of shared expertise and common struggles, as well as relatable experiences and insights from the natural networks themselves. This knowledge and experience are brought together in a podcast aimed primarily at professionals in the social care sector. By using the podcast as a didactic medium, we respond to the digitalization of the (educational) world and the growing need for easily accessible content. The collaboration between care organizations from five European countries provides a strong supportive basis and the potential for wide-reaching impact.
