Objectives

The main objective of this project was to support teachers and schools in the implementation of AI driven technology tools as a way to give an answer to diversity. Discussions of potential risks of AI are still relevant, but teachers need practical guidance of what the opportunities could be to integrate the AI driven tools into classroom practices. The objective of this project was to focus on the AI technologies that could foster aspects of inclusion to reach equity amongst students. AI tools can provide personalised learning tracks, both for students who lack certain skills and prior knowledge, as well as for high achievers or early finishers who often get bored by the absence of learning challenges. In some cases AI could also support accessibility and be helpful for students with special needs. The project wants to go beyond the information about tools. The idea is to produce flexible pedagogical learning activities and scenarios in which AI driven technology is integrated and equally importantly which can immediately be implemented in the classroom.

Background

Both Lernacon in its interaction with teachers during its trainings and workshops for teachers, as well as the 3 school partners in discussions amongst colleagues, captured the need amongst teachers to go beyond theoretical discussions in staff rooms about the revolution (and potential danger) AI may bring to education. Much of the debate about AI and education has been about the risks of student use (and misuse). This project tried to give teachers practical guidance and inspiration to integrate AI driven technologies in teaching scenarios. Teachers want to experience, in a safe way, how artificial intelligence can be beneficial and how it can be integrated in the curriculum. There is also a common need in education to be more inclusive and to step away from one-size-fits-all. Diversity is a reality and education needs to address different profiles of students. It is also important that schools create learning communities where innovators, together with less edtech-savvy teachers develop pedagogical scenarios.
