Objectives

The aim of this project is to teach young leaders about “Solidarity”. It was decided together with our partners to focus with FIMCAP Europe on the theme Solidarity from 2023 until 2025, which is in compliance with the European Youth Goals. It's especially applicable on the third European Youth Goal “Inclusive Societies”. FIMCAP organised an international seminar on solidarity in August 2023 in order to translate solidarity into concrete actions. FIMCAP wants to offer youth leaders knowledge and skills to set up solidarity actions at local, national and international level in a step by step learning process. The seminar was a reaction to the hardship and isolation the youth sector experienced during the Covid pandemic. With this countermovement, FIMCAP wanted to restore the feeling of cohesiveness and put the spotlight on European unity, global Solidarity and intercultural dialogue. For this reason, we also wanted to connect with and highlight this solidarity theme in EuroCamp 2024 in Belgium. During the project we wanted to strengthen the participants' knowledge on Solidarity in different ways. The camp theme was “The Smurfs’ festivities”, which gave a bunch of opportunities to integrate the theme Solidarity into our camp theme of EuroCamp. 1.The Smurfs: Solidarity with society: How can we as youth organisations contribute in a good way in society? And how can we involve our local groups in this? It was a considered decision to choose The Smurfs as a mascot for EuroCamp. “The Smurfs” was created by the Belgian comics artist Peyo as a series of comic characters. The Smurfs live in a community which is a kind environment because it’s based on the idea that each Smurf has their own talent and in that way contributes to the Smurf society as they can. They help each other when they are in need and know who they need by looking at the talents. In our opinion, this is a beautiful match with the Solidarity theme. Concrete examples of how we saw “Solidarity with society” practically during EuroCamp, will be explained below. 2.Festivities: Solidarity among organisations and solidarity among children and youngsters: We contributed each day of EuroCamp to another festivity (Valentine, Day of the elderly, National holiday, Chinese New year etc.). The Solidarity theme was woven directly and indirectly through these festivities. On the one hand, participants directly came into contact with Solidarity by means of a solidarity workshop, organised by Broederlijk Delen. We also organised activities together with people from the neighborhood. In both directions, this was a nice exchange moment. This will be explained below. The theme ‘Solidarity’ was also implemented in many activities (a teambuilding, an escape room, making an energizer…). On the other hand, solidarity was indirectly integrated during the week. We think solidarity starts with the willingness to try to understand each other with an open mind. Participants became aware that to initiate change, you first have to try to understand the point of view of the other. Learning comes from respecting different approaches and realities. The group of participants was very diverse and multicultural, so that’s a very interesting starting point to create this open mind attitude. We organized an international evening in which participants could teach the others a little bit about their own culture (Festivity: Day of the National holiday). There were possibilities to exchange typical international games, folks dances etc. Besides that, there were multiple games in which they had to be considerate of each other (for example: trust games), and each other's talents or shortcomings (for example: escape room, dropping etc. (Festivity: Dia de los muertos)). During the week they could use this input to create their own activity in theme of Solidarity. The task was to brainstorm and create an activity they could do with their local group and community to reconnect again. During the reflection moments that took place every evening, the participants got the chance to reflect about themselves and the activities they did that day. Afterwards they had some time to use the input from that day to make their own activity. With the help from the leaders they used different brainstorm techniques and coaching on how to take their activity to a higher level. Project objectives: 1. To give the participants the competences to work in an open intercultural setting. 2. To raise awareness and train youth leaders in the topic of Solidarity: What is Solidarity? In what shapes can it exist? How can it be linked with Youth work? 3. To offer youth workers knowledge and skills to set up solidarity actions at local, national and international level. How can it be implemented after this course?
