Objectives

2024 was a significant year, with no fewer than five elections taking place. For the first time, all these elections happened within the same year. In addition, 630,000 young people were eligible to vote for the first time. With the inclusion of 16- and 17-year-olds voting in the European elections, this number rose to nearly 900,000. Moreover, there was no voting obligation for the local elections, which made it even more important to engage young people. We therefore wanted to launch a politicising project to inform young people, rebuild their trust in politics, amplify their voices, and—more importantly—equip them with the skills to give their voice real impact. The project consisted of two parts, each with its own set of objectives: Part 1: Monthly local and supra-local activities We organised a variety of activities, including dialogue tables, workshops, visits to institutions such as the European Commission, podcasts, and street interviews. These covered various policy themes relevant to young people. The objectives of this part were: - To offer (disadvantaged) youth the space to experiment, engage in dialogue, and set up activities to inform, raise awareness, and activate themselves and their peers in the lead-up to the 2024 elections. - To bring young people and policymakers together to engage in conversation, close the gap, and increase youth engagement. - To teach young people how to explore a topic in depth and formulate an opinion or recommendation. - To provide insight into the functioning of European institutions, democratic processes, elections, government formation, and policy planning. Part 2: The Dream Booth We developed a Dream Booth: a mobile recording studio where young people could, after workshops or during events, record their opinions or dreams related to various policy themes—either in audio or video format. These recordings were collected and published on a website and in an app. The gathered dreams formed the basis for policy recommendations. The objectives of this part were: - To collect the voices of (disadvantaged) young people on various themes. - To formulate recommendations together with the youth and hand them over to policymakers. - To map out the needs of young people at the local level and facilitate conversations with local policymakers. Young people were also encouraged to take action themselves around these needs. - To create a website where the voices of young people could be heard and made visible.
