Objectives

The aim of the project "Beyond Borders" was to create a unique opportunity for young people with limited opportunities to overcome personal, geographical and social barriers and to move forward in their personal and professional development. The project was designed as a comprehensive learning experience aimed at promoting independence, self-esteem, interpersonal skills and global awareness. The main objectives of the project included: Stepping out of the comfort zone: Participants were guided to overcome their fears and limitations. By participating in organizing the trip, solving challenges in real time and communicating in unfamiliar situations, they learned to manage stress better, adapt to new environments, and find solutions to problems. This approach led to personal growth and a greater sense of competence. Fostering independence and organizational skills: The project emphasised the participants' involvement in all stages of implementation—from planning the itinerary to booking accommodation to preparing the activities. Participants were responsible for most of the organisational arrangements themselves, with a mentor who supported them and provided the necessary assistance. This process strengthened their ability to plan, coordinate, and collaborate effectively. Developing cooperation and communication: During the preparation and the trip itself, the group learned how to communicate and cooperate effectively in dealing with everyday situations. This collaboration not only strengthened team spirit but also helped participants develop skills such as listening, conflict resolution and mutual support. Breaking down the language barrier: Participants were motivated to communicate in a foreign language, which not only improved their language skills but also increased their confidence in communicating with people from different cultures. This enabled them to better understand the global context and strengthened their ability to navigate in an international environment. Promoting inclusion and diversity: The group was made up of young people with a range of barriers, including geographical barriers, being part of an LGBTQ+ minority and other disadvantages. Involving these participants alongside young people without disadvantages created a space to share experiences and perspectives. This led to greater tolerance, mutual understanding and the breaking down of prejudice. Environmental awareness: One of the main themes of the project was environmental sustainability. During the preparation and the trip itself, participants were made aware of the environmental impact of travel and were encouraged to find ways to minimise their carbon footprint. The project encouraged the use of public transport, minimising plastic waste, saving energy and water and respecting local culture and the environment. The trip also included an analysis of the differences in approaches to protecting the planet in different countries. Participants were inspired by concrete examples that they could share in their communities upon their return. Discovering cultural differences: The trip allowed participants to explore different cultures, traditions and customs. By visiting different countries, they gained a broader awareness of the cultural diversity of Europe. Participants reflected on cultural differences, which contributed to the development of their empathy and intercultural competence. This experience motivated them to gain a deeper understanding of the differences between different nations and to embrace European values. Intergenerational connections: The project also included follow-up activities aimed at sharing experiences with the wider community. Participants organised lectures about their journey and the DiscoverEU initiative. These lectures were aimed not only at peers in schools but also at elderly people in retirement homes. This intergenerational dialogue contributed to building bridges between generations, spreading awareness of the possibilities of European programmes and inspiring further activities. The 'Beyond Borders' project provided young people with opportunities for personal and professional development, to gain new experiences and skills and to raise awareness of environmental and cultural issues. Participants learned to plan, collaborate, communicate in a foreign language and solve problems in real time. By engaging in follow-up activities, they were able to share their experiences and contribute to a greater awareness of European opportunities in their community. Overall, the project not only met its objectives but also inspired the participants to become more actively involved in society.
