The idea for this project was initiated by a group of young people between the ages of 13 to 17 years who meet on a regular basis in Pärnu Noorte Vabaajakeskus. They were told about a youth exchange that was successfully implemented by another group of young people in February 2023 project called FAKE. The young people loved the concept of the FAKE project and became interested in using the tool of youth exchanges as a way of learning and also to meet other peers their age from around Europe. Young people sat down with their youth worker and started brainstorming how to make this idea into reality. After some discussions, they realized that the most beneficial topic for them would be to learn more about the effects of the online world as they spend a lot of time online. The main thing young people wanted to achieve was a sense of accomplishment, they have never been part of a process in making such a big project, it was a possibility for them to be heard, to be creative, meet new people and cultures, practice their English, but most importantly in that age - boost their self-esteem and communication skills. The objectives for this project were the following: 1) Help young people to understand where the internet came from. It was an important objective considering the fact that these young people were actually born in a time where being online was already a very frequent activity. Thus, the young people wished to learn how their parents and grandparents spent their childhood and young adulthood without the constant influences by the internet. 2) Help young people to understand how they should present themselves online. Many young people post pictures/videos being in the moment, not really realizing the consequences it might hold in the future for them when they are entering the job market. Thus it was important to go through scenarios with young people and debate on how different types of posts online can affect us in the future. 3) Equipped young people with skills that help them stay safe online. Amongst the young people there were experiences and stories of other peers of being catfished or lured to send explicit pictures of themselves. Also many cases of cyber bullying, hacked profiles etc. Thus, it was important to learn online safety 101, so to stay safe online while enjoying the benefits that the online world offers. 4) Help to understand the mental health effects that staying online has on their mental health. A number of the young people in the group were not aware that the internet and being online actually leaves its mark on their mental health. Through this project we helped them to learn more about the effects. 5) Help young people to understand how to sometimes disconnect from the online world and enjoy time offline. Created activities and tools that young people used to entertain themselves in the offline world.
