Objectives

Our main reason for implementing this project was to provide financial literacy to youth workers because in recent years young adults, especially N.E.E.T youngsters were asking for guidance to improve their finances and unfortunately youth workers who work with them felt unequipped to advise them. To take a closer look at the issue Pärnu Noorte Vabaajakeskus interviewed local young people and youth workers in order to better understand where this problem comes from. We found out the following: - At school our young people have not been taught about financial literacy and budgeting which is a very important part of their life. - Most young people are just given money by their parents and not explained what it means to earn your own money. - Instant gratification plays a big role in young people's lives. Wanting everything now and not knowing what it means to save up. This instant gratification feeling makes young people make use of credit cards that puts them in the debt cycle. - Interviews with youth workers revealed that nearly 90% of them also lack basic financial literacy and they do not feel comfortable talking about this with young people as they feel they are not competent to talk about something they have never learned about. Additional research shows that if young people grow up in families with poor financial literacy, they have a bigger chance of themselves having poor financial literacy as well and end up with economic problems in their adulthood (Annisa, 2021). These family cycles of financial literacy need to be broken down and this can be done through education (Carter, 2019). Through research and interviews with local youngsters and youth workers we concluded that our youth workers mobility “Youth in Power of Money” main aim is to train youth workers in the area of financial literacy so in return they can teach this to the young people who they come in contact with. The objectives to support our main aim are: - Learn relevant terminology for financial literacy for young people. - Learn methods on how to address finance management with young people. - Bringing awareness to our spending habits and how it impacts our future. - Shifting the mindset toward more healthier and beneficial money management. - Gain tools on how to support young people in their daily wallet planning.
