The project integrated themes of environmental awareness, innovative teaching and learning practices, and healthy lifestyles, aiming to foster competence building, providing experience with diverse environmental and cultural contexts, and enhancing the effeciency of teaching and learning. We expected the involved students to improve their knowledge on natural sciences and environment, as well as to raise their motivation to see the link between learning and real life, and teachers to gain insights for designing and implementing cross-curricular studies in the field of natural sciences. We relied on international partnerships to provide fresh perspectives and explore new approaches—it's often invigorating to see how others operate, as it helps us re-evaluate and refine our own methodologies. For both students and teachers, the international collaboration was intended to broaden horizons on both personal and academic levels. It also aimed to encourage more confident interaction with peers and colleagues, not only for social engagement but also for academic cooperation.
In light of recent curriculum changes in Estonia, the importance of cross-curricular approaches in general education has significantly increased. As a basic schools, us and our project partners frequently observe our students struggling to connect academic learning with practical, real-life applications. While students require continuous support and motivation to engage meaningfully with their studies and to really learn effectively, teachers need to deepen their understanding of modern educational resources and teaching methodologies. Our school is located on an island, where the surrounding natural environment plays a vital role in our daily lives. As educators, we aim to instill in our students a strong appreciation for the value of a clean and healthy environment, and to inspire them to take an active role in its preservation. Environmental education is not only relevant to our local context but also serves as a unifying theme among all project partners, each representing a coastal country. With these shared goals and challenges in mind, initiating this project felt like a meaningful and worthwhile endeavor.
