Objectives

This project is at the crossroads of two axes that drive our organisation. On the one hand, and despite being a fairly small and isolated town, the city of Kalajoki is making particular efforts developing an international life and promoting a multicultural mindset among the population. Local youth in particular is at the heart of this commitment. On the other hand, as the municipal department of youth services, we are naturally trying to accompany local youth in their self-development, giving them the best opportunities to learn, get more active and build themselves as future citizens and young adults. With implementing such a project for a small group for local teenagers, we were aiming at giving participants meaningful learning experiences and insights about “adult life”. Through learning-by-doing, we wanted to invite travellers to develop their sense of initiative and break their mental barriers inherent to growing up in a rural environment. Obviously, offering fun, travelling adventures and positive, lifelong lasting memories was also a reason to bring this project up. The idea was to build a team of motivated and deserving youth and “make something happen” for them. The project was targeting young participants who either already had some interests for travelling and international activities but were lacking skills and resources to implement such an experience, or teenagers with fears, prejudices and a certain lack of interest and experiences towards international activities, but who could greatly benefit from such travelling experiences. On a longer term perspective, this project seemed to be an adapted tool to initiate our organisation and the local community to Erasmus+ youth mobility project. This low-scale, short lasting, partner-free Discover EU Inclusion Action project felt like an adapted format to kickstart EU funded international youth mobility projects in Kalajoki. Organising a Discover EU Inclusion action project would also provide the organisation with a highly appealing and self-explanatory example of possibilities that local youth could benefit from in the future.
