The project started with a request from our volunteers at Manoufa Ya Messo association. Two volunteers just graduated and were apprehensive for their departure to mainland France where they were going to attend university. They were afraid of that unknown place, far away from their family and so different from their own culture and habits. Their strongest fear was isolation and the difference of cultures but also how to manage their money when living alone. Two problems what occurred a lot for the youth leaving the island to go to university in mainland France. The DiscoverEU project seemed a good solution to help them conquer all their fears of the unknown. We selected young volunteers from the association ready to live this experience and wanting to learn from it. They were involved in the project since the beginning. They had to understand their own needs and identify them with the help of senior volunteers and their accompany persons during the project. They also identified the different competences they needed or going to learn for each step of the project (plan the trip, book the trains and loggings...). The main objective was to show them what they were capable of in terms of organisation and implementation of a big project. With a huge help, many sessions to guide them through, but at the end of the day, they were the ones doing the heavy work. They learned to manage a budget, to find solutions and compromises working in group settings and they became more autonomous. For the association, the main objective of the project was to help our youth in Mayotte to feel more European. Being so far away from Europe and mainland France, most of our youth don't feel French and even less European. Travelling around Europe by train, a new means of transportation for them, was a good opportunity to discover Europe, its values and cultures and to find their own place among them. Taking the train, finding the platform, being on time to not miss it etc... may seem mundane to many people but for our youth it was a new enriching experience.
