Objectives

Through this project, we wanted to build on the success of the first DiscoverEU experience we implemented last summer. As that initial edition was a real success, we wanted to offer other young people the opportunity to live this unique adventure of travelling across Europe by train. The young participants from the previous edition came back truly transformed, more confident, curious, and open to the world. Their enthusiasm convinced us to continue this dynamic and extend the programme to new participants. Beyond travel itself, our ambition was to provide young people with a space for expression and creativity. DiscoverEU gives them the opportunity to express themselves through the co-construction of their itinerary, the choice of activities, and the creation of digital content that highlights their experience (photos, videos, podcasts). The project also allowed them to voice their opinions and concerns ,particularly about inclusion, equality, solidarity, and ecology , during the preparatory phase, the mobility, and the final evaluation. This project was also a way to reach out to rural and isolated young people who are often unaware of European opportunities. Many of them have never heard of Erasmus+ and cannot imagine being able to travel abroad one day. Our goal was to remove the economic, social, cultural, and linguistic barriers that limit their mobility and to show them that a European journey is not only possible but also accessible and educational. Finally, we aimed to reduce fears and stereotypes regarding international travel by offering a safe and supportive environment in which young people could learn to design and manage a collective project on their own. Project objectives O1 – Openness and discovery Provide an opening to the world for young people with fewer opportunities. Allow them to discover Europe, step out of their daily routine, and broaden their horizons through cultural discovery. Respond to the strong desire to travel identified in our youth diagnosis (70% of 13–25-year-olds wish to travel to expand their horizons). Promote the opportunities offered by Europe and strengthen the visibility of Erasmus+ and DiscoverEU programmes. Raise awareness of European common values and cultural diversity. O2 – Personal development and skills growth Encourage young people to become active participants in their own learning and take initiative in project implementation. Strengthen self-confidence and mutual trust through cooperation and shared responsibility. Support language learning, especially English, and promote intercultural discovery. Develop transversal competences (autonomy, empathy, creativity, teamwork, decision-making, conflict resolution, ecological awareness) and technical skills (budget management, digital tools, social media communication, organisational and logistical abilities). Produce creative outputs for dissemination and memory (podcasts, travel diaries, social media publications). O3 – Inclusion and European citizenship Promote the values of inclusion, environmental respect, and equal opportunities, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. Remove economic, social, and geographical barriers to mobility. Foster a sense of belonging to the European Union and a better understanding of its cultures. Encourage civic engagement and youth participation as active contributors to the project. O4 – Reducing stereotypes and apprehensions Challenge stereotypes and prejudices, both towards oneself and towards others. Give responsibilities to every participant, regardless of their background or difficulties. Reduce fears related to travel, difference, or intercultural encounters. Help change the perception of young people, often wrongly seen as inactive or disengaged. O5 – Safety and support Enable young people to travel in a safe, reassuring, and educational framework while fostering autonomy. Ensure caring and continuous support before, during, and after the mobility to maximise learning outcomes. In summary, EU Tour by Youth 2024 aimed to give each participant the opportunity to discover Europe at their own pace, to grow through travel, and to recognise themselves as European citizens and agents of change. Through mobility, inclusion, and cooperation, this project allowed young people from rural or isolated areas to develop their autonomy, skills, and curiosity while building lasting human and European connections.
