Objectives

The project aimed to increase awareness and understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNESCO World Heritage among both students and teachers. A key objective was to help participants better understand climate-related problems and encourage them to take responsibility for environmental protection. Another important goal was to develop participants’ digital, green, and STEM/STEAM skills, while also promoting common values and active engagement in solving ecological and community-related issues. The project also sought to motivate students and teachers to participate in local environmental actions and to find innovative, technology-based solutions to these challenges. In addition, the project intended to build networks with environmentally conscious institutions and strengthen cooperation with local authorities. Overall, it aimed to improve the quality of education by introducing new methodologies and increasing engagement with sustainability topics in schools.

Background

The project was initiated to respond to increasing environmental challenges and the growing disconnection between people and nature caused by urbanisation. The partners recognised that reduced contact with the natural environment contributes to issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource-related problems, therefore there was a strong need to raise environmental awareness among students and teachers. Another important need was to strengthen the understanding and preservation of cultural and natural heritage, especially UNESCO World Heritage and intangible cultural values, which are often underestimated or treated mainly as tourist attractions. The project also addressed educational gaps, as topics like Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and environmental studies were not sufficiently integrated into primary education. Therefore, the partners aimed to support teachers with new methodologies and provide students with opportunities to engage in research, problem-solving, and experiential learning.
