The overarching aim was to “empower European citizens to visually express the EU’s impact on their lives through an innovative intergenerational approach.” Specifically, the project sought to: 1) showcase the EU’s positive influence on sustainable development, human rights, environmental protection, and local economies across three islands (Ireland, Madeira, and Sardinia); 2) foster collaborative learning and mutual understanding between younger and older adults; and 3) bridge generational and cultural divides through dialogue and artistic creation. By the end of the project, the intention was for participants to have developed stronger art and storytelling skills, deepened their understanding of the EU’s role in their communities, and strengthened their sense of European identity. Equally, the project aimed to create lasting outputs - a Virtual Museum of artworks, a network of intergenerational learners across borders, and increased capacity among partner organisations to deliver similar initiatives in the future.
The EU&YOU project was developed to address a clear gap in lifelong learning opportunities for adults, particularly those with limited access to cultural and educational activities, by empowering them to explore the EU’s impact on their lives through art and intergenerational exchange. Many adults, especially those from island and peripheral regions, see the EU as something distant and may have a neutral opinion about it, without clearly perceiving the tangible benefits it brings to their daily lives. Seniors (65+) were also prioritised as they often seek opportunities for active, healthy, and socially connected ageing, while other adults (25–64) were given a platform to voice their concerns and expectations about the EU. This project also responded to organisational needs among the partners, such as expanding adult education offers, strengthening digital and intercultural competencies, and building capacity for delivering inclusive, creative learning experiences. By leveraging art as a universal language, EU&YOU aimed to break down barriers linked to education, health, culture, and geography, fostering intercultural understanding and enhancing European identity.
