Objectives

Storytelling has long been a universal human practice, predating written language and existing across cultures as a means of communication and expression. The project aimed to bring people closer together by exploring fictional worlds and recognising shared themes in storytelling traditions. Its objectives were to deepen understanding of stories and their insights into the human experience across cultures and time; to develop students’ social skills and personal growth through engagement with myths and legends; and to improve language and communication skills, particularly in English, while raising awareness of Europe’s linguistic diversity. Teachers enhanced their practice through the exchange of methodologies. Students’ empathy, tolerance, and understanding were strengthened through collaborative activities such as storytelling, drama, and art, which also supported creativity, confidence, and social awareness. The project fostered a sense of community locally and internationally, while promoting a shared European identity through cultural exchange. It also developed students’ collaboration, problem-solving, and digital skills, while encouraging inclusion and challenging stereotypes to build greater unity.

Background

The project was developed in response to a growing sense of isolation and widening social, cultural, and educational divides in contemporary society. Boundaries between generations, countries, and cultures have become more pronounced, with individuals increasingly viewing the world through personalised social media perspectives. At the same time, rising nationalism and xenophobia present ongoing challenges. To address this, the project used storytelling as a unifying educational and cultural tool. Traditional and contemporary stories, myths, and legends enabled participants to reflect on shared human experiences, develop empathy, and better understand others, supporting inclusion, intercultural dialogue, and active citizenship within school communities. The project also promoted social & emotional development. Collaborative storytelling fostered teamwork & empathy, while creative activities such as dance, art, & drama strengthened relationships & built a sense of community. Enjoyable, shared experiences strengthened relationships and were a foundation for mutual understanding. Overall, the project aligned with our needs by using storytelling as a flexible, inclusive, and culturally responsive approach to learning and connection.
