Objectives

The project aimed to empower young refugees and migrants in Europe by creating a platform where they could share their experiences, identify common challenges, and collaboratively develop solutions to enhance their integration into European societies. At the heart of the project was the desire to promote social inclusion and foster intercultural dialogue. By facilitating meaningful interactions between young refugees, migrants, and local communities, the project sought to bridge cultural gaps, build mutual understanding, and cultivate a sense of belonging for these individuals within their new environments. One of the key objectives was to empower the participants through active engagement. The project provided opportunities for young refugees and migrants to take part in discussions that were centered around their personal experiences and the challenges they faced. This active participation was crucial for helping them reflect on their situations, understand their journeys more deeply, and build resilience. The initiative was designed to foster collaboration among participants, using a variety of activities such as focus groups, team-building exercises, and design thinking workshops. These activities encouraged participants to work together in generating innovative and practical ideas aimed at creating more inclusive systems within the countries they now call home. Another important goal of the project was to enhance the broader community’s understanding of the migrant experience. Through activities like the Gallery Walk and focus group discussions, participants were able to share their stories, providing others with deeper insights into the complexities of migration. This exchange not only helped in increasing awareness but also contributed to the participants' empowerment by validating their experiences in a public forum. The project also focused on identifying and addressing both the supportive and discriminatory factors that affect migrants at various levels—individual, organizational, and systemic. By encouraging open discussions on these issues, the project facilitated the development of strategies to counteract discrimination and strengthen supportive environments. The design thinking methodology was a central tool in this process, enabling participants to brainstorm and prototype practical solutions that directly addressed the challenges they faced. These solutions were intended to be actionable and realistic, aiming to improve the integration process for refugees and migrants in tangible ways. In addition to empowering the migrants themselves, the project also sought to benefit the participating organizations from Iceland, Finland, Austria, and North Macedonia. Through their involvement, these organizations were able to develop cross-cultural collaboration skills, enhance their project management capabilities, and improve their communication strategies within the context of an international, multicultural initiative. Overall, the project was designed not only to support the integration of refugees and migrants but also to foster a broader culture of understanding, collaboration, and positive social change across Europe.
