Objectives

TAISTY responded to the demands of the DIGITAL EDUCATION ACTION PLAN (ACTION 6) to help teachers and educators to understand the potential that the applications of AI and data use can have in education and to raise awarenessof the possible risks. Our project exploited the potential of a pedagogical-sound use of Chatbots like ChatGPT for information research, brainstorming and combination of information to support the preparation, delivery, and evaluation of practical trainings in the field of culinary. TAISTY created tailor-made AI enriched teaching and learning scenarios to motivate teaching staff and learners towards an improvement of the digital skills. Learners with fewer needs (e.g. dyslexia ) were involved focusing on low-threshold and “multi”-media solutions (text, pic, videos) to help them to learn better. AI use also fostered a greener recipe creation and reduction of food waste (e. g. portioning of food recipes). In addition, the use of AI like ChatGPT required a pedagogical driven reflection of applicable practices in training; this requires especially hands-on guidance on ethical use, “hallucinations” (false answers of AI), and classroom strategies (e. g. GDPR / data protection, brainstorming tasks).

Background

Previous experiences of the TAISTY partner organisations concerning the pedagogical-sound use of educational technologies in culinary and IT trainings showed, that practical experiences, continuous support and ready-made teaching and learning materials are needed to use modern technologies like AI in trainings. This is the key to make trainings for students more digital, more motivating and more collaborative (human-human, involving on- and off-site collaboration as well as synchronous and asynchronous communication; and human-AI). In addition, the popular use of AI like ChatGPT requires a pedagogical driven reflection of applicable practices in training as the “genie is out of the bottle”. This requires especially hands-on guidance on ethical use, “hallucinations” (false answers of AI), and classroom strategies (e. g. GDPR / data protection, brainstorming tasks, combination with on-site activities like practical tasks to reflect AI outputs). Learning with and about AI is the key in education to prepare teachers and learners with the right skills and competences for coping with related existing and future developments. The field of culinary professions provides literally an appetizer to the potential and challenges of AI use.
