Objectives

The main objective of the project was to develop a specialized curriculum for volunteers, building on the foundations laid by the Digi-Ageing project (coordinated by Hafelekar). The existing curriculum was therefore adapted to meet the needs of both volunteers and coordinators. This involved emphasizing information on chronic illnesses and incorporating the use of reminiscence tools to facilitate meaningful connections with a broader group of beneficiaries: elderly individuals and chronically ill people struggling with loneliness. Another key project goal was to design a 16-hour blended learning program specifically tailored for volunteers. This shift in focus from the previous emphasis on certified nurses in vocational education and training aimed to enhance volunteers' ability to build relationships with the elderly and those affected by chronic illnesses. Volunteers were also equipped with essential skills to use digital tools for diagnosis and intervention, enabling the timely identification of loneliness among beneficiaries.

Background

In recent years, addressing the growing issue of loneliness and isolation has become essential, especially among the elderly and people with chronic illnesses. This project, the result of collaboration between CSVs in Italy and the Hafelekar organization in Austria, is focused on this critical societal need. Our initiative aims to revitalize community bonds weakened by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has intensified feelings of isolation, particularly affecting the elderly and those with chronic conditions. Volontariato Vicenza/CSV, with its strong network in promoting volunteering and community engagement, and Hafelekar, as a hub for innovation and research, have joined forces to foster a culture of volunteering, empathy, and inclusion. The project's (achieved) goal was to equip volunteers with the tools and knowledge needed to build lasting relationships with these vulnerable groups, thereby promoting psychological and mental well-being as well as social cohesion. The training was designed to enable volunteers not only to provide assistance but also to cultivate meaningful connections, fostering a supportive community network.
