Objectives

This project aimed to provide youth workers with a creative and innovative approach to reach disadvantaged young people through a non-formal youth work approach. Research that had been done before the start of the project clearly showed how mentoring could have a very powerful impact on the positive development of young people with fewer opportunities. The training course was also based on the knowledge and experience gained through running a programme of mentoring young people, that had been developed after a KA2 project some years ago. Mentoring effectively requires a set of competences that cannot be taken lightly. Especially in this post-pandemic time, when young people are finding it ever more difficult to build strong, meaningful networks. The training course aimed to provide youth workers with the competences that they require to form a healthy, mentoring relationship with disadvantaged young people. Moreover, it offered experiential methods and tools that could be used during mentoring. Ultimately, an important aim of the training was to empower youth workers who support young people to lead an independent healthy life. The programme focused on providing the opportunity for youth workers to build their competence and their confidence to reach out to young people in need, who require a youth work intervention to support them in the journey toward personal flourishing and social inclusion. The objectives of this innovative training course were: 1. Share an overview of the mentoring environment when working with homeless young people. 2. Understand the essential Qualities of a good mentor. 3. Gain the knowledge and skills about accompanying disadvantaged young people through mentoring. 4. Develop a framework for the sharing of experiences through storytelling. 5. Explore tools that can be used to motivate your mentee to plan their future and follow through the plan and achieve positive results. These objectives were shared by all partner organizations who were interested in training their youth workers to be good mentors while developing the organizations' capacity to offer better supporting services to the young people.
