Objectives

The project aimed to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWD) by promoting the use of Easy Language (EL). Our key objectives were to raise awareness of the importance of EL, develop clear guidelines on how to create EL documents, and train service providers (SP) to produce high-quality EL materials. Through research, we identified existing gaps in EL knowledge and practice, ensuring that the project addressed real needs. The project team also intended to develop and certify training modules to equip SP with the skills to create accessible information. Additionally, by aiming to conduct train-the-trainer sessions we aimed to ensure long-term impact and knowledge transfer as a primary goal of the project. By achieving these objectives, the project would contribute to greater inclusiveness in education and public services, as well as increase efforts for PWD to access essential information, make informed decisions, and fully participate in society.

Background

We applied for this project to address the lack of accessible information for persons with disabilities (PWD), particularly those with intellectual impairments, by promoting the use of Easy Language (EL). Many PWD struggle to access information in a format they understand, limiting their ability to make informed decisions and fully participate in society. Despite legal obligations under the UNCRPD, service providers (SP) often lack the training and resources to produce EL documents. This project aimed to bridge that gap by conducting research, developing EL guidelines, and creating certified training modules to equip SP with the necessary skills to not only produce high quality EL documents, but train others to do so also. By ensuring that information is presented in an accessible way, the project promotes inclusivity, empowering PWD to engage more fully in society. Additionally, the requirement of transnational cooperation as part of this application provided us with a pathway to strengthen expertise in EL and allow best practices to be shared and implemented across different sectors and EU countries.
