Nowadays, we are surrounded by a world where the usage of digital tools and social media is increasing day by day. Today’s society is developing digital citizens who should be digitally responsible and conscious. Despite this fact, challenges arise in digital literacy and responsible usage of digital media. These challenges include privacy concerns, misinformation, cyberbullying, online hate speech, etc. Therefore, young people need effective guidance to develop their awareness regarding digital ethics in order to overcome these challenges. The reason behind the importance of digital ethics is that it ensures that technology and social media are utilized in a responsible way. By promoting accountable use of social media and digital content, we can promote a more equal world and a safe virtual environment. According to the survey taken by the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, cyberbullying was determined to be the main problem among Dutch young people. Moreover, the survey revealed the fact that only 34% of the Dutch youth thought that they were well-equipped with the necessary digital knowledge. They showcased their needs for being trained and supported in this area. Affected by the aforementioned factors, we decided to organize such a project to guide young individuals regardless of their backgrounds. The project became a cornerstone for the participants to raise their awareness of becoming informed digital citizens while ensuring that they had equal access to resources and digital contents. The “e-mpower: Shaping Digital Citizens” project enabled them to become active and responsible citizens of the virtual environment by providing them with the necessary knowledge regarding digital literacy, information privacy, and protection from fake news. Aligned with various factors, our main goals for implementing the project were as follows: -To enhance awareness regarding the ethical and responsible utilization of digital tools and social media among young people. -To equip young individuals with information related to the management of digital contents and the protection of private data. -To foster intercultural learning, mutual respect, and tolerance. -To provide young people with critical and creative thinking skills aligned with the quality standards of the Erasmus+ programme. -To promote empathy about cyberbullying by giving participants the role to understand the situation while being bullied in a virtual environment. -To encourage critical thinking regarding technology usage and digital security. -To channel the participants to take social responsibility in terms of becoming digitally responsible individuals in their communities. -To obtain a new perspective in order to build an uplifting and supportive online environment. -To provide the participants with the necessary knowledge for determining false information and properly evaluating resources. All in all, the “e-mpower: Shaping Digital Citizens” project successfully referred to its objectives aligning with the goals of the Erasmus Programme, including digital transformation, participation in democratic life, common values, and civic participation, inclusion, and diversity.
