Objectives

The Model European Union Netherlands 2023 (MEUNL2023) project was designed with a multifaceted objective aimed at enhancing the educational, civic, and social experiences of young people through an immersive simulation of the European Union's decision-making processes. At its core, the project sought to provide a comprehensive platform where participants could gain hands-on learning experiences about the intricacies of the EU, its governance structures, legislative procedures, and the pressing issues it faces. This initiative was rooted in the belief that understanding the EU from within—by actively participating in simulations of its decision-making bodies such as the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament—offers the most effective way to grasp how decisions are made at the EU level. The primary aim was to promote civic education among the youth, facilitating a deeper understanding of democratic processes and encouraging active citizenship. By engaging in debates, assuming roles of EU officials, and navigating the complex landscape of European politics, participants were expected to develop critical thinking and robust debate skills, which are essential for informed and engaged citizenship. The project also emphasized the importance of fostering a sense of European identity and solidarity, highlighting the diversity and commonalities within the EU. Networking and cultural exchange were integral components of MEUNL2023, with a strong emphasis on creating opportunities for participants to interact with peers from various backgrounds and countries. This interaction was envisioned to enrich participants' understanding of European cultures and societies, fostering mutual respect and tolerance. The organizers aimed to make these exchanges as inclusive and accessible as possible, covering travel, accommodation, and catering costs to remove financial barriers to participation. Furthermore, MEUNL2023 sought to contribute to participants' personal and professional development. By simulating the roles of EU ministers, MEPs, journalists, and lobbyists, the project provided a unique experiential learning environment where participants could hone essential skills such as communication, negotiation, and teamwork. These experiences were designed to be not only educational but also enjoyable, ensuring that participants would form lasting friendships and networks that could benefit them in their future careers. An innovative aspect of the project was its incorporation of discussions on the EU's Green Deal framework, aligning with the thematic priority of "A Sustainable and Green Europe" under the EU youth dialogue. This focus aimed to engage young leaders in meaningful discourse on environmental sustainability and climate change policies, thereby raising awareness and understanding of these critical issues. It underscored the project's commitment to empowering participants to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future. In summary, MEUNL2023 was conceived as a comprehensive educational initiative aimed at empowering young Europeans with knowledge about the EU's decision-making process, enhancing their civic engagement, and fostering a sense of European identity through cultural exchange and debate. The project's objectives were closely aligned with the Erasmus programme's priorities on youth participation, international cooperation, and environmental sustainability. Through this initiative, we aspired to nurture a generation of informed, engaged, and responsible European citizens, equipped with the skills and understanding necessary to navigate the challenges of the 21st century and contribute positively to the future of Europe.
