Objectives

Tur Cos Ta Posibel sees young people with fewer opportunities from Aruba as double disadvantaged, on one hand programmes are less accessible due to their status of 'fewer opportunities' and lack of knowledge and information about opportunities then, due to the remoteness of their geographical location, international opportunities are much more difficult to access than someone living in Netherlands for example. Our organisation aims are to create a situation of equity where opportunities are offered to our youth to equalize their status with their EU peers. We have seen huge benefits to engaging with young people with fewer opportunities in international programmes and levelling up, creating supported programmes to engage this particular group of young people. We endeavour to level up and create equity for young people experiencing additional obstacles in their lives. We discovered the significance of this additional barrier to participation of this group, being the geographical barrier to travel and experience the EU, only one of the five young people selected had been to Europe and that participant went as a child to a funeral, few Arubian youth consider themselves European and many have little opportunity to visit due to the significant cost of reaching Holland. Usually when young people have the opportunity to travel to Europe it is to study and as few of our target group will progress to Higher Education, this means their opportunities to experience European travel, culture and meet their EU peers is inaccessible. Few of our target group have had the chance to learn about Europe first hand or indeed to discover Europe’s opportunities for their future. Through ADIEU – we wanted to offer a small group of our youth the opportunity to say farewell (adieu) to Aruba for a short time in order to embark on a supported short European experience similar to that their more advantaged peers have easy access to. Without ADIEU (or a similar supported programme) it would be unlikely that the group we targeted would have this experience, widening their exposure to the wider EU and potentially changing their life trajectory.
